Top Travel Tips

There are a number of steps you can take before, during and after your trip for maximum care and protection while you are away:

1. Visit your Governments travel advisory service

Review the latest advice regarding your desired destination. If possible, sign-up for email alerts to ensure you are made aware of any changes as they occur.

2. Take out appropriate travel insurance

Be sure that you are adequeately covered while you are away. Ensure your policy covers for hospital treatment, medical evacuation and any activities in which you plan to participate in.

3. Register your details with your Government

Before leaving on your holiday, notify your Government on where you intend to travel to. This will assist them in locating you in case of an emergency. When you arrive at your destination, register in-person at any Australian embassy, high commission or consulate. (For Australians, visit the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade).

4. Apply for any required visas

Be sure to obtain the required visas for the countries you are visiting, even if you are only passing through or stopping over.

5. Make a copy of important travel documents

Before travelling overseas, make a copy of your itinerary, passport details, insurance policy, travellers' cheques, visas and credit card numbers. Leave one copy with a family member or friend, and carry another copy in a separate place to the originals.

6. Seek medical advice before travelling

Look into whether there are any recommended vaccinations or other health precautions before leaving - your local GP should being to provide this information.

7. Ensure you have a valid passport

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months. Keep additional copies of your passport photo just in case.

8. Familiarise yourself with local laws

Be aware of the laws which apply in the country you are visiting. Consular assistance cannot override local laws.
