Warning of 'potential terrorist threat' in Pakistan
25 November 2006
Australians have been warned of a potentially life threatening terrorist risk for westerners in Pakistan.
Following a bombing in central Peshwar a month ago and other attacks in the country, the government has urged citizens to reconsider their need to travel and to avoid all travel to Baluchistan and sensitive tribal and border areas.
"We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning against a range of targets in Pakistan. These attacks could occur at any time," reports the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
It added that places visited by tourists and other foreigners and Pakistani government buildings were at risk.
The department also reports that malaria, dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis are common in Pakistan and that there is a high cost for medical evacuation to Australia.
It recommends that travellers drink bottled water and avoid uncooked food and ice cubes, in addition to purchasing comprehensive travel insurance for their trip.
In March, a suicide bombing outside the Marriot Hotel in Karachi resulted in the deaths of at least four people and injury to dozens more.
