Thailand 'a top destination' for Australians
10 August 2007
Thailand is reportedly the top travel destination for Australians heading to Asia, beating Hong Kong into second place with China and Japan at joint third.
A tourism survey from Visa found that 51 per cent of Australians are "very likely" to travel to Asia over the next two years, the Associated Australian Press reports.
Furthermore, approximately 12 per cent of Australians believe that it is likely they will head to Beijing to enjoy the 2008 Olympic Games, though a fifth of those surveyed were purportedly unaware that the Chinese metropolis would be hosting the games next year.
In May 2007, the Asia Travel Intentions Survey 2007 from Visa found that Thailand was in fact the most popular destination for international travellers for the second successive year.
"With events such as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, unique cultural experiences and the importance of relaxing and environmentally-friendly travel options, it is not surprising that the region continues to attract travellers from around the world," said Somboon Krobteeranon, Visa International country manager for Thailand.
The Australian government advises citizens to purchase travel insurance before travelling to Thailand, noting that private hospitals require confirmation of cover ahead of treatment.
