Sri Lanka calls for confidence on tourism industry
29 March 2007  Following an alleged terrorist attack, Sri Lanka Tourism has called on partners in the nation's tourist industry both within the country and internationally to retain their confidence that the sector will bounce back from its recent setback.

Earlier this week, the Australian department of foreign affairs and trade reported that the closure of Bandaranaike International Airport had been the result of a suspected attack from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The department called on Australians to reconsider their need to travel to the country and to totally avoid the northern and eastern parts of the country.

Donald Perea chief of defence in Sri Lanka, said: "All possible measures are being taken to strengthen and upgrade the air defence system to avoid, pre-empt and counter any recurrence of such terrorist offences."

The tourism board has stated that with the help of Sri Lankan Airlines it will keep up-to-date information regarding flights from the airport at its official website.

Last year, financial research firm Defaqto warned that some travel insurance policies that cover holidaymakers against physical terrorist action will not protect them financially from the threat of terrorism which may affect their trip.
