'Special visa' required by Aussies heading to World Cup
01 February 2007  Australians heading to the Cricket World Cup this spring have been reminded that in addition to purchasing their flights and travel insurance, they must also have a Caricom Special Visa dated for February 1st to May 15th 2007 before heading to the Caribbean.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reminded those heading to the islands for the event that the host countries are operating as a single domestic space to enable travel to the region during the event.

Australians have been advised to organise their visa before travel to avoid being stranded on connecting flights due to passage being denied.

The department has also warned of the risk of crime, some of it gang related, in the Caribbean.

"In some parts of the Caribbean, violent crime, including armed robbery, kidnapping and murder, is common," it reports.

"There is also a high rate of petty crime, including pickpocketing and bag snatching," it added.

Last year, travel insurance provider Norwich Union reported that the Caribbean was third in a list of theft hotspots reported by holidaymakers abroad.
