Solomons PM clashes with Australia on travel advice16 March 2007
Manasseh Sogavre, the prime minister of the Solomon Islands, has attacked the recent travel advisory information from the Australian department of foreign affairs as a misrepresentation of the situation in his country.The department has advised Australians to reconsider their need to travel to the islands as a result of continued political tension in the country.
But the Australian Associated Press reports Mr Sogavre as dismissing this warning as "mischievous scaremongering" from the Australian government.
"Such excessive and outrageous claims do irreparable and unnecessary damage to our growing tourist industry," the prime minister said.
He added that the Solomon Islands sees thousands of visitors every month who engage in sightseeing activities and diving on their trips.
The Australian government has recommended that those citizens who choose to travel to the Solomon Islands purchase comprehensive travel insurance and keep a high level of personal security.
