Singapore reports record year for tourists
02 February 2007  The tourism sector in Singapore hit record levels of performance during 2006, with hundreds of thousands of Australians picking up their travel insurance and heading to the island in south-east Asia.

Generating an estimated S$12.4 billion (AUD$10.4 billion) during the year, Singapore saw 9.7 million visitors to the country, with 692,000 visitors bearing from Australia, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) reports, with only China and Indonesia being the starting point for more travellers.

Mr Lim Neo Chian, deputy chairman and chief executive of the STB, said: "This has been a record-breaking year for tourism.

"This strong performance can be attributed to successful marketing and promotional efforts as well as the better connectivity and increasing affordability of air travel."

He added that recent years had seen the development of new tourism products and regeneration of older ones to preserve the popularity of Singapore as a holiday destination.

STB is an economic development agency for the tourism sector in Singapore with the stated aim of developing and promoting tourism in the country.
