Older travellers get discounted travel on The Ghan31 August 2007
Older holidaymakers wanting to travel across Australia on The Ghan train service between Darwin and Alice Springs will soon be able to benefit from a discount of over half the price.Great Southern Rail has this week welcomed the announcement by prime minister John Howard that older travellers will gain discounts of up to 55 per cent on the world-renowned route.
Tony Braxton-Smith, chief executive officer of the firm, said: "This is an excellent initiative by prime minister Howard who should be congratulated as it will give a much needed tourism boost to Northern Territory and south Australia."
He predicted that this pricing change will result in additional 10,000 domestic holidaymakers making the Alice Springs-Darwin round trip every year.
Earlier this month, Great Southern Railways announced a new timetable for its Melbourne to Adelaide service, offering "more convenient" departure and arrival times for Australians picking up their travel insurance and heading across the country on a domestic break.
