Official Jordan travel advice unchanged despite shooting
09 September 2006  Australians wishing to travel to Jordan are advised by the Foreign Office to exercise a high degree of caution - an unchanged level of warning despite the recent shooting in Amman.

Those investigating the shooting within Jordan describe the gunman as not being affiliated with any terrorist organisation.

Despite the lack of change in the official government warning, foreign minister Alexander Downer has said that he would discourage his own children from visiting the parents and urged others to avoid the country.

"Some countries are safer than others, some parts of some countries are safer than others," he told ABC Radio, "but generally my advice to people is if you're going to, particularly your own children, your loved ones, when you think so passionately about them you advise them to keep to places which are safe."

The government's travel advice website has two levels of warning above Jordan's current status - reconsider your need to travel and do not travel.

While not reaching these levels yet, travellers are reminded to exercise caution and as ever, always be covered with travel insurance when going abroad, especially to destinations with more risk than others.
