Matariki celebrations 'to be biggest ever'06 June 2007
Holidaymakers hopping across the water to New Zealand this year could be in for a treat, with the annual Matariki celebrations set to be the largest ever.A traditional Maori harvest festival, the Matariki festival is named after the Seven Sisters constellation whose appearance in the sky marks the Maori new year, which this year falls on June 16th.
The festival celebrations include concerts, seminars, the Maori Hand Games, Matariki cuisine and more.
Johnny Edmonds, chief executive of the New Zealand Maori Tourism Council, said: "It's fantastic to see so many people embracing Matariki.
"It gives people, especially those visitors from overseas, a chance to engage with Maori and see what it is that makes Maori unique."
He added that the resurgence of this festival gives all those from New Zealand the chance to recount the importance of their culture to the world.
In Maori tradition, Matariki is the time for the planting of trees and crops alongside the rekindling of relationships with family and other loved ones.
