Government downgrades Fiji warning
07 June 2007  Australians considering a holiday in Fiji will be interested to learn that the department of foreign affairs and trade has downgraded its travel warning regarding the country, with travellers told to "exercise caution", rather than a "high degree of caution".

This change in advice follows a decision on the ground by the government of Fiji to end the state of emergency initiated following a military coup last year.

"The state of emergency, declared after the coup, was lifted on May 31st 2007," the department's website notes.

"It remains possible that political tensions could lead to violence. You should avoid demonstrations, street rallies and public gatherings as such events could result in civil disorder."

Holidaymakers heading to Fiji have been advised to organise comprehensive travel insurance, register their details for emergencies and to subscribe to travel advice email updates.

The Australian Associated Press reports that Parmesh Chang, permanent secretary to the prime minister's office in Fiji stated that the country had played its part and expected a relaxing of travel warnings relating to the country.
