Domestic and international tourism on the rise
14 June 2007  More Australians are heading abroad than ever before, new research claims, while the domestic tourism industry in the country has also seen an improvement in fortunes.

A recent study from Tourism Research Australia found that holidaymakers took a total of 4.4 million trips abroad during 2006, a 2.3 per cent rise on the figures for the year before, spending an average of 22 nights overseas.

Meanwhile, there was a five per cent rise in the number of people taking time out in Australia, with 73.3 million people taking overnight trips in the year ended March 2007.

Fran Bailey, tourism minister, said: "Now Aussie families are rediscovering great experiences in their own backyard, not only having a great family break but also injecting millions of valuable dollars into regional communities."

Tourism Australia reports that outbound travel grew six per cent in the year ending June 2006, with New Zealand receiving the highest number of Australian travellers and the UK the most for overnight stays.
