DFAT warns of potential attacks in Indonesia
13 July 2007  Citizens have been warned to reconsider their need to travel to Indonesia following a review of the travel advice from the Australian government, with the department of foreign affairs and travel (DFAT) warning of the "very high" risk of a terrorist attack.

Despite recent arrests of terrorist operatives in that country, the authorities conclude that there remain active terrorists planning fresh attacks which could occur at any time.

"Australians should consider this information carefully when considering travel to Indonesia. Particular care should be taken at this time to avoid known terrorist targets," DFAT reports.

Locations cited by the department as being at risk include the Australian Embassy and nearby Jalan Rasuna Said bridge as potential targets for attack, in addition to sports venues, shopping centres, hotels and exhibition centres.

At present, Australian soccer fans may already be present in Indonesia for the ongoing Asia Cup tournament, though the team's recent shock 3-1 defeat to Iraq could well threaten the Socceroos' progress to the latter stages of the competition.
