Bulgaria: hot spot for 2007
05 August 2006  Bulgaria will be the number one travel destination for holidaymakers and annual travel insurance holders next year, according to a new study.

Online travel company, Opodo has identified Bulgaria as the top emerging holiday destination of 2007, as part of its top ten destination predictions for the coming year.

The number of UK holidaymakers heading to Bulgaria, both with and without travel insurance, has risen by 40 per cent over the last six months while the number of travellers heading to Russia has increased by 24 per cent, according to Opodo.

Neil Mott, Opodo's UK country manager, said: "2006 has seen a strong rise in travel to eastern European countries since, whilst being accessible, they still hold a certain 'mystique' for the traveller.

"Morocco will also become one of the biggest tourist hotspots of 2007. It's a reasonably short flight and the country is so vastly different that tourists can quickly immerse themselves in another culture."

Russia, Morocco, Cuba and Australia are listed as the top five up-and-coming destinations for 2007, with Opodo predicting "fierce competition" between the airlines once the Airbus A380 'superjumbo' begins flying to Australia.

Bulgaria, which shares its borders with Turkey, Greece and Romania, has a number of seaside resorts along the Black Sea coastline as well as ski resorts in its mountain ranges.
