Australians told 'do not travel to East Timor'
01 March 2007  The Australian government has advised its citizens, including those with travel insurance, to avoid travelling to East Timor.

Following civil unrest in the country that has resulted in a number of deaths, Australians have been warned that there is an increasing probability that Australians in East Timor may be specifically targeted.

Australians already in the country have been advised to consider leaving if it is safe for them to do so.

"If you decide to stay in East Timor, you should avoid all necessary movement, particularly at night," the government's travel advisory website warns.

"Movement by Australians in Dili, including in the vicinity of Comoro Airport is increasingly likely to draw a hostile reaction from street gangs and displaced persons."

Former prime minister of East Timor Mari Alkatiri resigned from his post on June 26th 2006 after a period of civil unrest and was replaced by Jose Ramos Horta in the following month.
