Australians advised to reconsider Pakistan travel
24 August 2006  Australians have been warned to contemplate seriously their need to travel to Pakistan in the near future by the Australian government.

Pakistan has been assigned "reconsider your need to travel" status, with "do not travel" advice given to federally-administered tribal areas and the India and Afghanistan borders.

Travellers are being encouraged to journey to an alternate destination if at all possible and to always take necessary precautions before going abroad.

"We strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance that will cover any overseas medical costs, before you depart," the government's website notes.

"Confirm that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away and check what circumstances and activities are not included in your policy.

"Remember, if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel."

This advice comes in the light of what the government calls "credible reporting" of a risk to western hotels in Islamabad and a number of terrorist attacks in the country in recent years.
