Australian travellers offered flight warning
26 March 2007  Australian travellers are being discouraged from flying on Indonesian aeroplanes following a recent safety audit report which found that none of the south-east Asian nation's airlines meet full safety standards.

The report, by Indonesia's civil aviation authority, reveals that all of Indonesia's 48 commercial airlines are in some way breaching the safety regulations applied by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Some 32 carriers, including Lion Mentari Airlines and Garuda Airlines, were found to have met only minimal requirements and a further 16, such as Batavia Air and Kartika Airlines, have been told they have three months to improve their safety standards or risk administrative sanctions.

The Australian government is therefore advising passengers, including those with Australia travel insurance, to take the safety audit into consideration and check with their travel agent when making holiday plans in Indonesia.

The warning follows the death of 21 passengers on board a Garuda Airlines Boeing 747-400 three weeks ago. The plane overshot the runway at Yogyakarta Airport before bursting into flames.
