Aussies get volunteer travel tips
03 August 2007  While many travellers will see their time abroad as an opportunity to kick back, relax and do nothing for a fortnight, many are now looking to their time overseas to give something back to the places they visit by engaging in volunteer work.

Volunteers can travel across the globe from Africa to the Artic, offering help in environmental projects or teaching English in countries the world over.

Travellers can either apply for aid work with a travel agent, government-funded volunteer group, non-governmental organisation, or instead try to develop their own contacts from home, the Age reports.

"However, always let people at home know where you are and what you are doing - you will be in an impoverished area in a foreign country and you should take precautions," the newspaper adds.

While going abroad with an official group can often provide volunteers with health and travel insurance, those making their own way to their destination will have to purchase their own cover.

In May 2007, Australian Volunteers International initiated a recruitment drive during National Volunteer Week, with the body seeking a number of professionals for roles in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Pacific.
