Aussies get Thai travel warning
23 February 2007  The Australian government has issued a travel warning to its citizens considering travel to Thailand, urging a high degree of caution and reiterating the need for a comprehensive travel insurance policy before heading abroad.

According to the department of foreign affairs and trade, there are reports of potential bombing attacks in department stores, subway stations, sky-trains and other crowded areas in Bangkok.

"You should avoid demonstrations, political rallies and concentrations of military personnel," the government warns.

"You should monitor the media and follow any instructions issued by local authorities."

The government reminds travellers that, following a military takeover in Thailand last September, martial law remains in effect in some parts of the country.

On September 19th 2006, the elected government led by Thaksin Shinawatra was overthrown by a military junta, with the coup endorsed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Cheapflights reports that Thailand has gained popularity as a tourist destination as a result of its attractive beaches and vibrant nightlife.
