Aussies flock to see Indian treasures
19 July 2006
Australian travellers are flocking to the Indian sub-continent, with tourism there doubling in the last three years.
Travellers are primarily 'baby boomers' according to Express Travel World, with people spending between AUS$200 and AUS$300 on average per person on each trip.
Ambika Soni, minister for tourism and culture in India, recently announced that Australian tourist numbers have grown to 100,000 since 2003 and with the array of beautiful and affordable sights to see in the country, it's no wonder why.
For those intent on seeing India's most famous architectural landmark, the Taj Mahal, Agra is the destination of choice which boasts incredible views inside the complex and on the shores of the neighbouring river bank.
Meanwhile, Lonely Planet reports that the French colony of Pondicherry is popular for people looking for an alternative view of India, with the Voluntariat offering goods made by local lepers.
Travellers are advised to take precautions and as well as ensuring they have adequate travel insurance they should make sure they've stocked up on any necessary medications and vaccinations before leaving home, to avoid the infamous 'Delhi Belly', which could turn a trip sour.
But those adventurous enough to sample the many delights India has to offer can join the growing number of Australian tourists who have made the country their number one destination.
