Aussie travellers given Fiji mumps warning
03 October 2006  Australian travellers are being warned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to be aware of a recent mumps outbreak in Fiji and advised to check that any potential medical costs are covered by their travel insurance policy before they leave the country.

Mumps is a viral infection, spread by direct contact and airbone particles.

Symptoms include fever, chills, headache and swollen salivary glands - specifically the parotid glands - with serious complications a possibility.

The government noted that Fiji has limited hospital facilities and that in the event of serious illness, evacuation may be required.

It said: "The Department of Health and Ageing advises all travellers to discuss with their doctor whether they need to have MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination prior to travel.

"We strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance that will cover any overseas medical costs, before you depart."

Doctor Josaia Samuela, family health advisor at Fiji's Ministry of Health, has told the Fiji Times that a fall in the reported cases of mumps meant that the infection was "possibly coming to an end".
