Aussie fliers 'favour carbon offsetting' to halt global warming
05 April 2007  Amid increasing concern regarding the impact of flying abroad on the environment, many Australians are considering voluntarily using carbon offsetting schemes to counter the effect of their own travel.

Travel website TotalTravel.com reports that over a third of Australian holidaymakers are considering the use of such schemes, while around a fifth would even consider giving up flying.

Despite this trend, the survey also revealed that 16 per cent of Australians stated that thoughts of climate change would not impact upon their travel choices in any manner.

Last summer, travel insurance provider Halifax reported that the effects of climate change would drastically alter the worldwide tourism industry by 2030.

David Rochester, senior pricing manager at the travel insurance firm, said: "With increased extreme weather events and dramatic temperature increases predicted, holidaymakers will be considerably more at risk abroad in 20 or 30 years than they are today."

He added that there would be a shift in travellers' chosen holiday destinations as a result of changes to the global climate.
