Ashes to return to England despite victory
04 January 2007  Despite Australia's convincing performance in December to regain the Ashes from England, those wanting a glimpse of the famous urn that have missed its recent exhibition will have to pick up their travel insurance and head to England when it returns there at the end of the month.

Former England batsman Ian Botham and Sir Richard Branson have called for the Ashes to stay in Australia, where they are currently on tour, with the urn only returning to England if and when they again win the tournament.

This request has been rejected by the urn's owner, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which notes that the urn itself has never been considered as the trophy of the tournament and in fact remained in England after it was donated to the MCC by Florence Morphy in 1927.

"The urn will return to Lord's after the exhibition tour finishes at the end of January," the MCC said.

Australians, including those with travel insurance, electing to travel to Lords to view the remains of a stump said to symbolise the burned corpse of English cricket, may see if the English game can rise from the flames when they take on the West Indies in May.
