Air New Zealand urges true end of ADC
03 July 2007  Passengers picking up their travel insurance and flying into Auckland International Airport will soon not have to pay the Airport Development Charge (ADC) - but an airline in the country has noted that the charge is not being abolished, merely renamed and levied instead upon airlines.

Air New Zealand reports that the ADC will be renamed as a Passenger Service Charge and also increase at the start of July 2008.

The company argues that the fee paid to Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL) will be passed on to passengers when they book their flight, with AIAL enjoying "excessive" profits as a result of its monopoly.

Rob McDonald, chief financial officer of Air New Zealand, said: "Instead of punching a credit card into a machine at the airport to get your departure sticker, the fee will be collected by the airline on behalf of AIAL when you book your fare."

He added that the cost of the ADC is making New Zealand a more expensive holiday destination for international travellers and called for it to be properly abolished.

Last month, Air New Zealand reported that over 20 cm of snow had fallen on The Remarkables ski resort in 24 hours ahead of its opening for the season.
